Media Blasting

Every product that goes through our batch powder coating process is first prepared with media blasting – also known as sandblasting. This critical step ensures the substrate is clean, textured, and fully ready to accept powder coating.

Sandblasting removes old coatings, rust, and surface contaminants, creating a “toothy” surface profile that allows the powder to melt, flow, and bond effectively to the material. This not only enhances adhesion but significantly improves the durability and longevity of the final finish.

We sandblast a wide range of materials, including:

  • Steel (stainless, structural, and more)
  • Copper
  • Galvanized and galvannealed metals

Our blasting process uses aluminum oxide media – ideal for aggressive surface cleaning without damaging the integrity of the part.

Proper surface preparation is critical to powder coating performance. Media blasting removes rust, old coatings, oxidation, and other contaminants while creating a textured surface profile that helps the powder adhere securely to the metal.

The terms are often used interchangeably, but media blasting can involve several different abrasive materials rather than traditional sand. Powder Kote Industries uses aluminum oxide media for aggressive and effective surface preparation.

Media blasting can remove rust, corrosion, old paint and coatings, oxidation, and other surface contaminants. The goal is to expose and properly prepare the underlying metal before a new powder coating is applied.

Powder Kote Industries media blasts a variety of metal substrates, including stainless steel, structural steel, copper, galvanized metal, and galvannealed metal. Our team evaluates the material and condition of the part to determine the appropriate preparation process.

Media blasting is integrated into our batch powder coating preparation process. Once a part has been properly prepared, our team can move it through the appropriate coating process while controlling the work in-house from surface preparation through finishing.
